Report: Mariners Have Interest In Marlon Byrd
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies are deciding between whether to stand pat or trade away some key pieces as the trade deadline approaches. One player that appears to be a candidate is Marlon Byrd. According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the Seattle Mariners have been scouting the Phillies' right-fielder.
Byrd is in the first season of a two year deal that he signed to return to Philadelphia. Byrd is hitting .261 with 18 homeruns this season.
Seattle is 49-43, but they play in a tough American League West division, where they are nine games behind the first placed Oakland A's. The Mariners are in need of a right handed bat and Byrd could provide some pop to their lineup.
In his current contract, Byrd has a limited no trade clause that allows him to refuse a trade to four teams. That list of teams includes the Mariners along with the Royals, Blue Jays and Rays according to CSN's Jim Salisbury.
Byrd is due just $3.5 million through the rest of this season, but is owed $8 million dollars next season.
