Report: Former Phillies Closer Ryan Madson Attempting Come Back In KC
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Ryan Madson has not pitched in the major leagues since 2011. That year he was a member of the Phillies and assumed the role of closer from Brad Lidge.
Madson saved 32 games for the Phillies that season. That season was the last time the Phillies went to the playoffs and was the most dominant of that regime's run as they totaled 102 wins.
After that season, it appeared that Madson would sign a long-term deal to stay in Philadelphia as the team's closer. During the off-season, a reported deal between Madson and the Phillies fell through.
The Phillies changed course that off-season and opted to sign Jonathan Papelbon to a 4-year, $50 million deal. Madson wound up going to the Reds on a one-year deal worth $8.5 million.
Madson did not get the chance to pitch for the Reds as he underwent Tommy John surgery in Spring Training which ended his 2012 season. Madson failed to come back in 2013 when he attempted to do so with the Angels.
He sat out the entire 2014 season.
At 34, Madson is going to take another shot at pitching again. According to an ESPN report, Madson has agreed to a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals. The deal reportedly includes an invite to major league camp which will give Madson an opportunity to have another chance to pitch in the majors again.
