Red Light Cameras To Begin Operation This Month in Abington Twp.

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- The first suburban Philadelphia community to get red-light cameras expects to have them installed and snapping pictures of license plates sometime this month.
Abington Township has already put all the approvals in place and awarded the contracts (see previous story). They're just waiting for right-of-way agreements to install the poles at three intersections. That work is expected to take place sometime during the month of January.
Abington police chief Bill Kelly says the goal is to use technology to improve safety and reduce accidents and injuries.
"The intersection at Susquehanna and Old York Road is the most dangerous place in Abington Township, traffic-wise, and it's almost impossible to do normal enforcement," he tells KYW Newsradio.
The other two intersections are Old York Road and Old Welsh Road in Willow Grove, and the Abington side of the intersection at Moreland and Fitzwatertown Roads.
There will be signs posted letting drivers know the cameras are there, and for the first two months drivers caught running the lights will get only warnings.
