Hundreds Gather For Rally To Support Police In Northeast Philadelphia
By Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of people turned out for a rally to support police in Northeast Philadelphia Friday night.
The sound of car horns filled the chilly air in Mayfair. Supporters lined the streets holding signs like "honk for our police" and "we support cops".
Donald Garvey started a page on Facebook, asking his friends and neighbors to show up, and it grew from there.
"I set it up for the 99 percent of the good police officers out there, to support them and their families."
He says this isn't designed to take attention away from any other movement in the country, and he hopes people don't read too far into the motivation behind the rally. Simply put, he said, good cops deserve a thank you every once and a while.
Jessica Stevenson from Mayfair agrees.
"They're the ones that protect all of us."
One off-duty officer here told KYW Newsradio it feels good to see this support. In his words, the thin blue line grew a few sizes thicker.
