Protesters Against Temple University Football Stadium Assemble Outside Board Of Trustees Meeting
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple students and residents in North Philadelphia joined forces Tuesday afternoon to protest the universities plan to build a football stadium.
One student protester told KYW Newsradio the university needs to address bigger projects before grabbing the shovels for the multi-million dollar stadium.
"We're getting emails about 175 million dollar deficit. We still don't have a sexual assault crisis center on campus, workers on campus are still paid poverty wages, we're out here telling Temple that we don't think a stadium should be the top priority, and we want to go to a university that respects the community around it."
Many of the protesters say the north Philadelphia location where the university wants to put the stadium is disrespectful to the neighbors who live there.
"People have lived here their entire lives, their grandparents have lived here. Because the people on our board of trustees are basically representatives from huge corporations in the city, we're not surprised their not acting in the interest of the people."
The Temple board of trustees recently approved a $1 million "feasibility study" that will see if the university can build a football stadium in that neighborhood.
