PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed following a double shooting in North Philadelphia early Wednesday morning.

Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a shooting at 20th Street and Nedro Avenue in the city's Ogontz neighborhood.

They found two victims, both of them suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was a 25-year-old female who was eight months pregnant.

The woman and a 26-year-old man were both taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. The pregnant woman was pronounced dead at 1:03 a.m. Doctors performed an emergency delivery, but the newly-delivered baby did not survive and was pronounced about an hour later.

The 26-year-old was shot in the back and the leg. He is in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.

Detectives stayed at Einstein to interview the victim.

Police believe at least 11 shots were fired at the corner of 20th and Nedro based on ballistic evidence. Authorities found 20 spent shell casings on the sidewalk and the street, and police are currently searching for a suspect in the shooting.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the two victims on the street next to a Chevy Impala with the engine running. The car, which police believe belonged to the female victim, was marked with bullet holes.

Police say witnesses saw an unidentified man running south on 20th street toward Nedro after the shooting. Several witnesses were interviewed by Homicide Police.

Several businesses in the area have surveillance cameras, and police hope to find information from going through the footage.

Charges, and whether the shooter could be charged with double homicide, will be determined by the District Attorney.

This is not the first time a pregnant woman has been shot and killed this month. On Sept. 14, a pregnant woman was hit and killed by a stray bullet in Philadelphia's Frankford neighborhood.
