Positively Philadelphia:   Children's Festival of Live Theatre

By Lauren Lipton

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The 30th birthday celebration of the International Children's Festival starts this coming Wednesday in University City, so get ready for some fun!

"The festival features professional theatre for kids ages 4 to 10," says Dawn Frisby Byers, director of marketing and communications for the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, at the University of Pennsylvania.  "We have six different shows from six different companies, from three different countries, and they're everything from nursery tales that have been brought to life to new works."

Byers says this festival gives many children their first contact with live theatre:

"I think it's so important that children are exposed to professional theatre at a young age, and that's what we try to do.  I think that sometimes the very little kids don't understand that art sometimes can be live if they're used to seeing it on TV."

And don't forget the free fun zone!

"It'll be open all day, every day of the festival, and it will have performances, crafts, jugglers, face painting, clowns, food, and more.  The Annenberg Center is located at 3680 Walnut Street, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, and the fun zone is in the plaza next to the building."

The Philadelphia International Children's Festival begins April 30th and continues through May 4th.
