PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police sources say a 32-year-old man from Pittsburgh has been charged with rape, robbery and attempted murder in a sexual assault in Spring Garden on New Year's Day.

Authorities report that an unknown man attacked a 33-year-old woman on the second level of a four-story parking garage at the corner of 17th and Callowhill Streets Thursday.

"It's mind boggling," said Susie Goodman, who recently moved to the area. "What a way to start the New Year."

The victim suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition.

The garage primarily serves residents of the One Franklin Town high-rise apartment building, but is also open to the public. Residents said the garage is secured.

"I know both of the rovers that walk up and down the aisles, the two that my building hired," said Alexis Tannebaum, who lives nearby. "I know that they do a diligent job with ensuring the safety of myself and the people that live in my apartment building and the monthly renters of the parking lot."

Crime scene investigators combed the garage for clues, and packed up several bags of evidence collected from outside the garage and the structure's second floor.

Police sources say the man's name will not be released until he is arraigned sometime Friday morning.
