COLLINGDALE, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County authorities are searching for a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in Collingdale and then fled the scene.

Collingdale police say the victim, 58-year-old Timothy McCaughan, was in the intersection of Spruce Street and Clifton Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by an SUV.

"Best guy in the world you ever want to meet. He was a father, grandfather, loving husband," the victim's brother Christopher McCaughan said.

According to police, a witness saw the driver stop, get out of the vehicle, make a comment, then get back into the SUV and speed off, heading south on Clifton Avenue.

"She was behind the vehicle, saw the accident, was calling 911 when he stopped, got out of the car, looked down at the victim, said what he said, got back in the car and then fled," Chief Robert Adams of Collingdale Police Department said.

The victim was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the driver is believed to have a close cut full beard, short curly hair, 6' 2" tall with a stocky build, possibly wearing red colored jacket.

"Turn himself in. Be a man. Have respect for human life," McCaughan said.

The vehicle of interest in the crash is an early 2000's model light colored Chevy Suburban, possibly light tan or gray, with rectangular shaped headlights. The vehicle may have damage to the orange plastic light assembly.

This is a still frame of the SUV the suspect was driving obtained from surveillance video from a nearby homeowner.

In the meantime, a family mourns a terrible loss.

"He cared about people. He took his shirt off his back for people," McCaughan said.

"If you know something, know the person, recognize, even think it could be, call us. Call us and give us the information. That one little piece of the puzzle is probably all we're looking for," Chief Adams said.

Police are asking anyone who saw the accident to call them at 610-586-0502.
