Police Responding To Threat Of Violence At Upper Darby High School

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) -- A threat of violence at Upper Darby High School in Delaware County prompted an extra police presence in the area Friday.

At the school last week, officials said there were several fights around the schools grounds, including one where an individual was stabbed.

Following the fights, authorities said rumors on social media turned into legitimate threats. Pictures of five separate students holding weapons were posted on social media.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said that online activity led to an increased police presence at the school.

Investigators said one specific threat mentioned Friday as a potential day of violence.

"This is a show of force to show anybody who would have any type of proponency for any type of violent act that the police are here and we're here to protect the students that are going to school," Chitwood said.
