Police: Detective Fires Weapon After Man Allegedly Points Rifle At Him

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Chopper 3 over the scene after shots are fired in Grays Ferry.

Philadelphia Police say at about 4:15 p.m., a detective was in the area of 1600 South Corlies Street to serve a warrant with the Attorney General's Office, when he saw a man who appeared to be carrying a rifle.

According to police, when the detective approached the man, he allegedly pointed the rifle at the detective.

Police say the detective then discharged his glock, never striking the man.

Investigators say the man dropped the rifle then fled on foot.

Police later apprehended him in the 2600 block of Dickinson Street, and he was positively identified by the detective.

Police say the rifle, a lever action, Winchester rifle, was recovered in the 1600 block of South Corlies Street.

No injuries were reported.

The incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs and will be reviewed by the District Attorney's Office.

The officer will be on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
