Police: Man shot following argument at Northeast Philly Wawa

Man grazed by bullet following argument at Wawa in Torresdale

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are investigating a shooting at a Wawa in Northeast Philadelphia. A bullet pierced through a glass door at the Wawa on Frankford Avenue and Academy Road, around 4 a.m. Friday.

Police say two men were arguing inside before one of them started shooting at the other just outside the entrance.

A 34-year-man was hit in the stomach. He is in stable condition.

"One of the bullets went through the glass door, lodged in a wooden trash can. Now we know that there were some employees and some customers in the store at the time. Luckily none of them were struck by gunfire," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The chaos comes as Wawa made changes to hours and even closed some stores due to safety and security concerns over the last few weeks.

This location is one of several that's still open 24 hours.

"I go in there everyday and I haven't had any problems but you never know you have to look over your shoulder everyday now just to go get a cup of coffee it's ridiculous," one customer said.

Customer Joe Curry added, "Kinda stinks because only place open this late that kind of has semi-good food or even this early before work."

At the scene investigators found at least two bullet casings on the sidewalk. They identified a small area between the interior and exterior doors as the site where that shooting took place.

Luckily, no one inside was injured. Wawa sent in a statement saying they were grateful for law enforcement's swift response.

Police are actively searching for the gunman. They say the suspect left the scene on a motorcycle.

They're hoping surveillance video will lead them to the suspect.
