Police Make Arrest After Fatal Hit And Run In Ocean County
BARNEGAT, N.J. (CBS) -- A 61-year-old woman is dead and another woman behind bars after a hit and run in Barnegat Township.
Police arrested 27-year-old Cassie Hansen Monday night for "knowingly leaving" the scene of a fatal car accident that killed 61-year-old Marie Thorne earlier that day.
According to authorities, Thorne had been struck by a vehicle while walking on Ridegway Street in the area of Bayview Boulevard just before 8 a.m. She was transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Based on debris at the scene, police began looking for a 1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado or a 2000-2006 Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban with front-right damage.
Hours later police say they received a tip about a car matching that description heading south on Route 9. Officials say a short time later Sergeant Jason Carroll located a tan Silverado truck with front passenger side damage in the driveway of a Center Street address.
Further investigation led to Hansen's arrest. She was charged with 2nd degree knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in death and is being held in the Ocean County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
