One Dead, Another Injured In Head-On Crash In Northeast Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One person is dead and another was seriously injured after a head-on crash outside Northeast High School in Northeast Philadelphia.

The two vehicle accident happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday near Cottman and Algon Avenues.

Police say a 21-year-old woman was driving northbound along Algon Avenue when she collided head-on with a vehicle travelling eastbound on Cottman Avenue. The woman was ejected from the car and thrown underneath the vehicle.

She was rushed to Aria Torresdale Hospital where she was pronounced dead several hours later.

The second vehicle slammed through a fence and ended up on the lawn outside Northeast High School. The driver, a 66-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with a broken neck. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

Police say one of the drivers may have run a red light, but the exact cause of the crash was being investigated.

All lanes of Cottman Avenue between Algon and Summerdale Avenues were closed as a result of the crash.
