Police: Multi-Vehicle Crash Leaves Man Dead, 6 Others Injured In Overbrook Park
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A crash involving several vehicles left one man dead and six other people, including a 5-year-old boy, injured in Philadelphia's Overbrook Park neighborhood. The crash happened on the 7200 block of Haverford Avenue just after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The neighbors Eyewitness News spoke with say the scene was traumatic for all. It was a scene of sorrow and community courage.
"Everyone just jumped into action to do what they could," one neighbor said.
Surveillance footage captured by the Haver Convenience Store around 2 p.m. shows employees and neighbors rushing to the aid of those hurt in the chaotic multi-vehicle crash.
"When I came out here all I saw was mangled cars. I heard people screaming, I seen other cars stopping, I heard babies crying, women screaming for their kids," one neighbor said.
A 35-year-old man died at the scene, according to police. Six others, including a 5-year-old boy, were injured and taken to the hospital.
At first, it's hard to tell what led to the deadly collision, but video obtained by Eyewitness News shows a Ford traveling east on Haverford Avenue, and another car in the westbound lane also traveling east, attempting to pass the Ford on the left before cutting back over.
According to police, the driver of the Ford fled the scene on foot as the community ran out of their homes and businesses to help in any way they could.
"All the nonsense and mayhem going on in the city, I can say that this community and neighborhood just pulled together as a unit and tried to do what they could," one neighbor said.
If you have information on the driver of the Ford, you are asked to contact police.
