Police Chase Ends With 5th DUI Charge For Del. Man

DOVER, Del. (CBS) – Police have arrested a Delaware man for his fifth DUI after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, an anonymous call came in to the Kent County Emergency Operations Center about a possible drunk driver in the area of Royal Grant Development.

Troopers responded to Royal Grant Way and saw a black BMW parked in the roadway with a male slumped over the wheel like he was asleep.

The driver reportedly awoke when a trooper opened the door to the car to check on his well-being. The suspect immediately sped away.

At that point, police began pursuing the BMW with their emergency equipment activated and saw it turn onto Crown Circle, where it backed into a driveway and came to a stop.

Though police told the suspect to shut the car off, he accelerated forward again and almost struck an officer standing outside his patrol car before striking the front of a fully marked police car.

The suspect continued driving onto Crown Circle and then drove southbound before coming to a stop a few houses down, where he exited his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Using a Taser, police were able to take 34-year-old Steven M. Williams, of Lewes, into custody.

Williams was charged with his 5th Offense Driving Under the Influence, Arrest with Force, two counts of Disregarding a Police Officer's Signal, Reckless Endangering 2nd, two counts of Criminal Mischief, and Reckless Driving.
