Police: Driver Fleeing From Accident Killed In Double Fatal Wilmington Crash
ARDEN, Del., (CBS) -- Delaware State Police say two men are dead following an accident near Wilmington Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the accident happened around 2:30 p.m. as 68-year-old John Hawrylak of Wilmington, was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala traveling northbound on Marsh Road, approaching the area of Millers Road.
Police say a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass, operated by 53-year-old Stephen Rementer from Garnet Valley, Pa., which was allegedly fleeing from a previous property damage collision on Naamans Road, was traveling southbound on Marsh Road, approaching the same area.
According to police, Rementer was speeding and crossed the center line of Marsh Road as he entered a right curve in the roadway.
Police say the Oldsmobile initially traveled across the northbound lane and struck a cement wall and guardrail before traveling back into the northbound lane directly in the path of the Impala. According to police, Hawrylak applied his brakes and skidded briefly, but the vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lane.
Police say both vehicles rebounded and rotated in a clockwise manner before coming to rest partially off the roadway just south of Millers Road.
Both drivers, who police say were not properly restrained, were taken to Christiana Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this collision and police say a toxicology report on Rementer is pending.
Marsh Road between Naamans Road and Harvey Road was closed for about three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
According to police, the property damage crash prior to the fatal collision happened about one minute before when Rementer allegedly struck the right rear of a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, which was stopped for a traffic light in the right lane of Naamans Road at Marsh Road.
Police say Rementer exited his vehicle after the crash and began arguing with the female driver of the Malibu as she called 911. According to police, Rementer then returned to his car and fled southbound on Marsh Road and collided with the Impala.
The female driver was not injured in the crash.
