Phillies players greeted by fans in return to Citizens Bank Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- They're back! The Phillies landed at Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday evening after the Astros won the World Series in Houston.

A magical Red October comes to a bitter end, but players, coaches and fans say they're left feeling optimistic.

From 9th inning comebacks, record setting home runs and game saving catches, to merchandise flying off shelves, packed ballparks and celebrations in the street, the Phillies' improbable postseason-run captivated the city and region.

The outcome isn't what fans hoped for, but they were left with memories that'll last a lifetime.

The Phillies buses pulled inside Citizens Bank Park with fans waiting outside for one last time during the 2022 season.

"It was just important for us to be here to show them that we're proud of them and all that they did," Lauren Tumelty said.

Team leaders Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper spent a few minutes signing autographs and taking pictures with the crowd.

Fourteen-year-old Olivia Allen shares a birthday with Harper. She also got a photo with the reigning National League MVP.

"It's crazy, I didn't think that would ever happen," Allen said.

James Tucker, 5, also scored a picture with Harper, matching his idol from head to toe, including a Phanatic headband

"I wear it for Bryce Harper to hit home runs in the World Series," Tucker said.

Phillies faithful everywhere showed lots of pride this Red October and November. From nail, hair and balloon art, to cupcakes, light displays, pep rallies and parties in the streets.

"I think it just filled people with a lot of hope and happiness and a sense of being together," Susan Shelton said.

This team bridged us all - beyond baseball.

"I'm just proud of them, what they accomplished," Jason MaCewen said.

Phillies fans were extremely thankful for the team's run to the World Series, and they hope to see them back there next year.

And if you can't get enough baseball, the first day of spring training is Feb. 24.

Philly fans of course still have a lot of reasons to be excited. The 8-0 Eagles play the Washington Commanders just across Pattison Avenue one week from Monday.
