Phillies Call-Up Grady Sizemore
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies had to make a decision on Grady Sizemore and they finally have. If Sizemore had not received a call-up to the big league club by the break, he could be let out of his deal. The team did not allow that to happen.
Yesterday, following the team's 9-1 win over the Brewers and their 4-game sweep, the team called up Sizemore and optioned David Buchanan to Triple-A to make room for Sizemore on the roster.
To make room for Sizemore on the 40-man roster, the team also placed Cliff Lee on the 60-day disabled list.
The team will not be in need of a fifth starter until late July due to the All-Star break so optioning Buchanan down to the minors will allow him to keep pitching in the interim. Buchanan started the 9-1 game over the Brewers allowing just one run before being sent down.
No need worry about the length of Lee's disabled list designation. Because Lee has been on the shelf since May 19th, he is eligible to be activated as early as July 18th and is expected to pitch in the team's first series after the All-Star break in Atlanta. Lee has made two rehab starts and is expected to make a third on Monday.
The Phillies are hopeful that the veteran Sizemore can add a punch to their outfield which has lacked production all season long. Sizemore hit .289 with one double, one home run, two RBIs and a .738 OPS in 50 plate appearances in his 10 games with the IronPigs.
