Philadelphia Will Extend Its Long History of Hosting Political Conventions

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia is no stranger to presidential nominating conventions.
The Democratic National Convention has been held here twice already, most recently in 1948, when Convention Hall hosted both parties: the Republicans in June, and then the Democrats in July.
"I can't tell you how very much I appreciate the honor which you've just conferred upon me," said Harry Truman, who was renominated for a full term as president following the death of Franklin Roosevelt. "I shall continue to try to deserve it."
The Democrats also nominated FDR here in 1936 (top photo), in Franklin Field.
The Republican National Convention has been held here in Philadelphia six times, the first in 1856 and the most recent in 2000, when the party nominated George W. Bush.
