Phila. School District Likely Updating Transgender Student Policy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia School District is expected to officially update its policy on accommodations for transgender students.

Their Policy 252 would allow students to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. But the policy goes beyond bathrooms.

It would make dress code allowances, and allow students to play intramural sports based on their gender identity. The policy would also permit a student's preferred pronoun and name to be entered on report cards and rosters, although their legal name would appear on their diploma.

The district already has a nondiscrimination policy, but this one would give principals guidance to accommodate transgender and nonconforming students.

The School Reform Commission is expected to vote on the policy Thursday night.
