Police release video of suspects wanted in shooting outside Roxborough High School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police have released images of the suspected vehicle and shooters wanted in a shooting outside Roxborough High School on Tuesday that claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy and left four other teens injured.

In addition to the five suspects captured on camera, police are also searching for a sixth suspect who was driving a light-colored SUV. It's believed the suspects in the shooting may all be juveniles.

During a press conference Wednesday, police provided surveillance video capturing the shooting of the five teens -- four of them football players. They had wrapped up a scrimmage when police say at 4:41 p.m. Tuesday they were ambushed on their way back to the high school locker room.

Nicholas Elizalde, a 14-year-old from Havertown, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at 5:09 p.m.

Police say the remaining four teen gunshot victims will survive.

The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, but police don't believe it had anything to do with football or anything that transpired during the scrimmage.

About 64 shots were fired, from ballistic evidence found at the scene. As many as ten shots hit the high school building. Police say 9 MM and 40 caliber rounds, as well as what a police commander described as "armor-piercing bullets" were fired outside Roxborough High School.

The five shooters arrived outside the high school six minutes before opening fire on the teens ranging in age from 14 to 17. Police say the shooters were lying in wait, and contend evidence points to this being a targeted hit.

However, they believe Elizalde was not the target but an innocent victim.

"Following the initial barrage of gunfire, four of the five shooters are observed returning to the suspect SUV. A fifth shooter continues to pursue one of the shooting victims. Shooting at him as both are running down the street," Philadelphia Capt. Jason Smith said. "The victim is ultimately struck by one of the offender's bullets and he collapses on the sidewalk. The shooter runs up to the victim as he lay helpless on the ground, stands over top of him and continues firing. The only thing that stopped this individual from firing is that he apparently had run out of bullets and his slide had locked to the rear."

Police are looking for a light-colored Ford Explorer. That is where the shooters lay in wait for several minutes until they jumped out and opened fire.

Sources tell CBS3 that the light-colored Ford Explorer may have been stolen from Delaware County in August. Police did not comment if they had information on a tag. Sources also say one of the teenagers being chased, a 17-year-old, had been involved in a prior shooting where he had been shot himself.

Police are offering a $40,000 reward for information. Information can be reported by calling 215-686-TIPS.
