Philadelphia Offers Mental Health Screenings To Raise Awareness

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mental health was being highlighted across the city of Philadelphia this afternoon.

The city's Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disabilities Services participated in National Depression Screening Day by setting up screening locations around the city.

Clinical operations manager Dana Careless (in photo) says they offered passersby checks on a range of disorders.

"There's anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, disordered eating, alcohol misuse, and there's even a screening that an adult or a guardian can take on behalf of an adolescent," she said.

Careless says the goal was not to diagnose but rather to raise awareness of mental health issues.

"People can come and just take resources," she said.  "They can get information, they can learn more about what we do.  Or we have an entire team of masters' level clinicians where they can sit down and actually take a screening."

For those who prefer to be screened in private, you can take a survey online and get more information at healthymindsphilly.com.
