Philadelphia Native Dominique Curry Happy To Join Soul

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- A former George Washington High School and Cheyney University football standout is headed back to Philadelphia.

The Arena League's Philadelphia Soul last week acquired WR/LB Dominique Curry in a trade with San Jose.

"I'm pretty excited," Curry tells KYW Newsradio. "Get a chance to play back in front of my hometown. Haven't really played here since college, back in '09. Been away for awhile, feels good to be back."

Listen to the entire interview with the Soul's Dominique Curry:

Curry, who played multiple sports in both high school and college,  caught 134 passes during his three seasons at Division II Cheyney before finishing up his college football career at California (PA). He spent time with three NFL teams (St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers) before giving the indoor game a try. Last season while with the SaberCats, the 26-year-old Curry caught 50 passes for 588 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for five more scores while making 21 tackles on defense. He talks about the transition to the Arena Football League.

"It's not that difficult," Curry says. "You've just got to get used to the motions. Other than that, it's pretty similar except that everything is shorter, everything is compact so you don't really have room to get open. And just getting used to getting off the jam and the motion, the forward motion, and running the ball and taking hand-offs and playing special teams, defense and offense. Just getting used to the constant play of the game."

Curry says he was familiar with the Soul organization even before the trade.

"I'm pretty familiar with it," Curry says. "Actually, in high school I went to a couple Soul practices with my head coach, Ron Cohen, at George Washington. I've been a fan of the Soul since then. I've just followed them throughout my career, even when I was playing in the NFL I always made sure I checked on the Soul. So I like what they have going for the team and everything that they're doing as far as organization-wise. I really respect that."

The 2015 season begins for the Philadelphia Soul on Sunday March 29th when they visit Orlando.
