Meet Philadelphia's Undefeated Eagles Football Team
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Philadelphia is home to a newly minted championship Eagles football team-- a group of 95-pounders from the Olney section of the city.
The 18-member Olney Eagles blazed through their season undefeated. Then they did it again in the playoffs for an combined 10-0 record, claiming the title of Cadet division champions of the Northeast Suburban Athletic Conference.
"It's the first Eagles Championship since 1960," says Orben Robinson, assistant coach for the Olney Eagles Team. He says they are a youth version of Philadelphia's NFL team, donning green and black jerseys with an eagle on their helmets. But a big difference is the players are 9 and 10 year olds, weighing between 95 and 115 points and they're headed to the United Youth Football League championships in Florida next week.
"It's phenomenal," says Robinson. "Our kids really bought into our philosophy-- they did it big."
But they need some help getting the team and coaches to the national tournament in Florida for the event, set for December 6 through 13.
"We probably need about $15,000 and that will take care of the lodging and travel and food," he says. "We have about $800 so far-- we started late with our fundraising. We didn't want to jinx it and there were no guarantees we'd make it."
But they did-- and they're hoping the area residents are touched by the "spirit of giving" this holiday and give big.
"We're looking for some good Samaritans," says Robinson.
The Olney Eagles have launched a go-fund me campaign and are looking for sponsors.
To see the boys in action, check out their practice today at 6pm at 6001 A Street, Philadelphia PA 19120.
