Woman killed in deadly crash in Philadelphia, police say

Police search for two drivers seen leaving the scene of North Philadelphia deadly hit-and-run

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 24-year-old woman was struck by one or more vehicles in front of her two sisters in the city's Feltonville neighborhood, according to Philadelphia police.

The deadly crash happened at North Front Street and Hunting Park Avenue around 3:30 Thursday morning.

Police said Tahtiana Diggs and her two sisters were driving when for some reason, they pulled over to the side of the road 2 miles from Diggs' home.

"The details are a little unclear," Captain Mark Overwise from the Philadelphia Police Department said, "but it appears that as she exited the vehicle, for some reason, she fell. As she fell, two vehicles were driving by southbound on Front Street, and Ms. Diggs was struck by one of those vehicles."

Fire department paramedics and police officers found Diggs on the street with chest injuries. CPR was administered on the scene before she was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:23 a.m.

Police initially were investigating this as a hit-and-run but in an update Friday afternoon said a driver came forward after hearing about Diggs' death and the area where the crash happened.

Detectives said Diggs was hit by a gray Kia, which left the scene. The driver later went to police and spoke with investigators. Officials said charges have yet to be filed pending the outcome of their investigation.

Authorities are still looking for a pickup truck driver traveling southbound on Front Street at the time of the crash Thursday. According to police, the pickup truck driver may have seen the crash happen.

Detectives initially didn't know what type of vehicle hit Diggs because there weren't surveillance cameras in the immediate area. The crash occurred between a U.S. Post Office and the Greenmount Cemetery. A police camera down the road captured a clue about the cars traveling on Front Street at the time.

"It appears there is a small SUV, either light blue or gray, followed by a pickup truck that is light gray, traveling southbound on Front Street as the crash occurred," Overwise previously said.

"If Ms. Diggs fell and was lying either prone or partially sat up in the roadway, it's possible the driver did not see the person before it happened. It probably happened very fast," Overwise said.

Detectives want to speak to witnesses who were in the area at the time of the crash.

"If you were driving on Front Street at 3:40 AM, please contact the Crash Investigation Division at 215-685-3180," Overwise said.

Investigators want to get to the bottom of what happened so the family can have closure.

"I spoke to the investigator who spoke to the family," Overwise said. "Obviously, they're very distraught."
