Phila. Officials Announce Effort To Save Money, Create Jobs By Making City Buildings More Energy Efficient

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- City Council President Darrell Clarke announced announced a ten-year effort to save money and create jobs, by making city buildings, businesses and homes greener.

Mayor Jim Kenney and Council President Darrell Clarke say the aim of the Philadelphia Energy Campaign is to invest in projects that make city-owned buildings and schools more energy-efficient.

"Investments in energy efficiency reduce emissions, improve city facilities and save taxpayers money," said Kenney.

The plan calls for $1 billion in public and private money over ten years citywide to retrofit public buildings, small businesses and low-income houses. Clarke says this announcement begins a six-month planning process.

"We're not inventing the wheel. What we're doing is putting three more wheels on, so we can roll towards the end of this process a little faster," said Clarke.

The effort will be coordinated by the Philadelphia Energy Authority.
