Philadelphia Encouraging Homeowners to Add Curbside Electric Car Chargers
By Kim Glovas
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you live in Philadelphia and own an electric car, you can get a special parking space in front of your home to charge your vehicle.
But be warned: it'll cost you.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority charges $50 for the non-refundable application fee, and then up to $500 more for installing the meter and signage.
One electric car owner, who declined to be identified, points out that it will cost even more for the homeowner to run power from the meter to the electric source.
"Running a line under the sidewalk, from my panel out to the sidewalk, buying the meter and installing it on a post, it was around $3,000," he told KYW Newsradio. "But," he added, "the state gave me a rebate... because I was one of the first 500 cars in Pennsylvania to do this."
Under the Alternate Fuel Vehicle Rebate Program of Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection, rebates are available until 500 electric car owners apply, or June 30th, whichever comes first.
