Philadelphia City Council Moves To Eliminate Permit Fees For Child Daycare Centers

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Daycare providers in Philadelphia may soon be getting a bit of a break on the fees they must pay the city under a bill approved by City Council this past week.

Right now, daycare centers with ten or more children must pay a $125 fee for a city permit, and daycare groups of any size must pay $250 in order to appeal a permit rejection. Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown says both amounts are too high.

"The fees for those of us in the city who want to provide childcare are onerous," she says. "Childcare providers enjoy a very narrow margin of revenue for taking care of little people. "When you talk to childcare providers, and what it costs first to get a regulated quality child care place and space, the fees are onerous."

Now, City Council has approved a measure authored by Reynolds Brown that eliminates both of those fees.

The measure now goes to the mayor, and he is expected to sign it.
