PennDOT To Open Route 202 To 6 Lanes Thru Stretch Of Chester County

KING Of PRUSSIA, PA (CBS) – Some relief is on the way for drivers who travel along Route 202 in Chester County.

PennDOT says it plans to open a 2.5 mile stretch of the highway to six lanes between the Route 401 and U.S. 30 interchanges in East Whiteland Township by mid-to-late next week, substantially completing construction on a $63.3 million improvement project that began in April 2013.

This is the second of PennDOT's two mainline construction contracts for the expansion of 6.5 miles of Route 202 to six lanes in East Whiteland and Tredyffrin Townships. PennDOT opened four miles of 202 to six lanes from just south of the Route 252 Interchange to just north of the Route 401 Interchange in September 2014. Construction on the first mainline contact, worth $105.4 million, began in April 2011.

PennDOT says crews will work Sunday, July 31, through Thursday, August 4, from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. to complete line striping and other preparations for opening the rebuilt and widened expressway to six lanes. The opening caps several weeks of nighttime construction by the contractor to complete final operations, including installation of concrete median barriers and repainting traffic lines.

Following the opening of U.S. 202 to six lanes, PennDOT says crews will close one lane in both directions on Route 202 between the Route 29 and U.S. 30 interchanges from 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, to 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6 to complete miscellaneous construction. Crews will continue to work and close lanes on Route 202 at night periodically for the next several weeks to complete miscellaneous construction activities in the work zone.

All planned construction work is weather permitting.
