Pa. Tpk. Tolls Rising 5 Percent in January, For Both Cash and E-Z Pass

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission today announced another round of annual toll hikes.  This time, beginning in January, both E-Z Pass and cash customers will pay an extra five percent.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokesman Carl DeFebo says it will be the first time in a couple of years that the toll hike will apply evenly to cash and E-Z Pass customers.

"This is the first time since 2011, which is the year the turnpike introduced different rates for cash and E-Z Pass customers," he said.  "So this is the first time since 2011 that the toll increase is the same."

But after several years of differential toll increases, DeFebo says, the discount for E-Z Pass customers will be at least 35 percent.

The five percent hike means that come January, the cost of the most common ride on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (examples of which would be the Blue Route-to-Lansdale in the east, and Pittsburgh-to-Allegheny Valley in the west) will go from $1.60 to $1.70 for cash and $1.04 to 1.09 for E-Z Pass.
