Driver Arrested For DUI After I-95 Southbound Crash
By Steve Beck
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The driver of a tractor-trailer is in critical condition after he sideswiped a car then lost control of his rig and overturned on I-95 early Wednesday morning.
The accident severely impacted traffic during the morning rush, and now, the driver of the other car has been arrested for driving under the influence.
The accident happened at about 4:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Woodhaven Road exit.
According to investigators, the driver of a silver Honda Odyssey was stopped partially on the right shoulder of the highway when a tractor trailer driving southbound sideswiped it. The truck driver lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median, causing his big rig to overturn into a ditch.
Emergency crews had to extricate the driver and he was rushed to Aria Health Torresdale Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
As a result of the crash, traffic in the southbound lanes were snarled for hours and backed-up for miles. The lanes were fully re-opened at about 9:15 a.m., but police shut down traffic on I-95 South for about 45 minutes on Wednesday afternoon so they could upright the tractor trailer. The road has since been re-opened.
Police also say the driver of the Odyssey was arrested and will be charged with DUI.
