4-car crash closes portion of Pennsylvania Turnpike near Quakertown

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - All lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Quakertown have reopened after a dump truck overturned, according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

The accident happened on the Northeast Extension between Quakertown (Exit 44) and Lansdale (Exit 31) around 7 a.m. on April 15.

Pennsylvania State Police said the dump truck overturned after a four-vehicle crash around the mile marker 39 southbound.

State police said the dump truck and another truck were stopped on the shoulder when a tractor-trailer swerved after its collision detection system began going off.

The dump truck driver tried to avoid being struck by the tractor-trailer but the truck tipped over and struck a third vehicle, state police said. The third vehicle then struck a fourth vehicle.

The drivers of the third and fourth car were taken to the hospital, state police said. Their conditions are unknown.
