Overbrook High School Gymnasium Gets A Facelift

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The Overbrook High School gymnasium is getting a facelift, thanks to the work of the school's athletic director and neighborhood volunteers.

"This area here, the paint was white and chipping off the walls," said Overbrook Athletic Director Robert Miller, giving a tour of the gym.

The walls in the halls outside Overbrook's aging gymnasium have received a fresh coat of orange and black paint, supplies and manpower courtesy of a nearby Lowes.

Miller is depending on the kindness of neighbors to complete the estimated $115,000 project by the end of next summer.

"We're looking at getting new light fixtures in the gym, new backboards," he said. "We're looking at putting crash mats on the walls to ensure the safety of our athletes, then have the floor re-done because the floors haven't been done in a very long period of time."

When the project is complete Miller hopes the facility will be named after the schools most famous graduate, "The Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Gym."
