Overbrook Baker Shot And Left For Dead Is Back In Business
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The owner of a Philadelphia bakery was robbed and shot in August. Now, the Best Cake Bakery is back up and running and the victim is explaining why, despite the horrific shooting.
These days foot traffic is pretty steady at Best Cake Kosher Bakery, in the Overbrook Park section of Philadelphia.
"I never knew that many people cared about me," said Zivka Djordjevic, the shop's owner.
It's not just the sweets that bring them in, many come just to check on Zivka, who friends simply call Ziza.
"To see now that she had the determination, remarkable," said Lt. John Walker.
Ziza is now trying to get back to normal, like she was before that day in August of last year. That's when police say two armed males broke into the bakery. They got away with a couple hundred dollars, but not before shooting Ziza in the neck.
"I said, oh my God, you have to get up and get some help," Ziza said.
Somehow she managed to pull herself off the floor to call police. She spent weeks in the hospital, and yet, she says she never felt alone.
"All those prayers around me and support," Ziza said. "I am a survivor and I'm glad I'm back to work."
While she recovered, she says she thought about never coming back to the bakery she's owned for more than 10 years. But, because of all the customers, who prayed for her and supported her, she decided that she needed them as much as they needed her.
"After the accident, and now all that support, I realize how much people care," Ziza said.
Ziza returned to the bakery several months ago. While she says she is glad to be back, she has increased security measures, including having surveillance cameras at the front and back of the bakery, for 24 hours a day. Meantime, police say they believe the same suspects that robbed the bakery this time, robbed the bakery in January.
