Man Accused Of Shooting 3 In East Mount Airy Charged With Murder
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One man is dead, two are hospitalized and one is in custody after a shooting during a football game get-together in Northwest Philadelphia.
It happened around 12 a.m. Monday inside a garage in the 8300 block of Gilbert Street in the East Mount Airy section of the city.
Police Chief Inspector Scott Small says four men were watching the football game when one of them pulled out a gun and began firing at the others.
"We know several shots were fired from a semi-automatic weapon," Small says. "We found two spent shell casings in the garage, next to the television and next to the couches. So we know that the shooter was shooting at point-blank range, because it's a pretty contained, small area, it's just a one car garage."
A 51-year-old man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other men, ages 52 and 58, also suffered gunshot wounds to the torso and were transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center in critical, but stable condition.
Police say one of the victims was able to give investigators a description of the 51-year-old alleged shooter, who was then tracked down several blocks away.
He has been identified by police as 51-year-old Bartholomew Nelson. Police say he has been charged with murder, violation of the uniform firearms act and related offenses.
The 15-year-old nephew of the man who was killed was inside the home at the time of the shooting, but was not harmed.
Authorities say the victim who was killed was involved in an argument with the suspect prior to the shooting.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
The investigation is continuing.
