Olney Charter High School Baseball Team Makes Historic Run

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As the season comes to a close, Olney Charter High School's baseball team was one for the history books.

Through hard work, grit and determination, the Trojans became the best public school baseball team Philadelphia has seen in decades.

"All of our hard work finally paid off," said senior Joseph Gomez, who played on the team all four years of high school. "It's indescribable. You work so hard to finally do something, show everybody."

Olney beat Frankford to bring home the school's first public league title since 1969.

The team then bested Father Judge to be crowned overall city champs; a feat not accomplished by a public school in more than 40 years.

"To win the city was the big one, last week," said Edwin Santos, whose son Christian is on the team. "That was very exciting for everyone involved."

Head coach Daniel Karlyn said taking home both titles was always their goal.

"I've been trying to preach to them that they can compete with teams outside of the public league," he said. "So when we had the opportunity to play in the city championship again this year, they believed that they can hang with any team and they showed it on the field."

Though they lost in the opening round at states to Boyertown High School, the Trojans have won plenty of hearts along the way.

"They've gone really far and we're really proud of them," said Leanna McCluskey, an history teacher at Olney Charter. "Even to make it this far is really exciting and awesome. Good recognition for our school. They're representing Olney really well."

Though 12 seniors graduate this year, the team has the potential to be dominant for years to come, with a promising JV squad.
