Oklahoma Student Suspended After Racist Texts Sent To Penn Students

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The investigation into racist text messages sent to more than 100 black students at the University of Pennsylvania this week has lead to the suspension of a student at the University of Oklahoma.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren reached out to Penn President Amy Gutman Friday night. He told her a student at Oklahoma has been suspended.

In a statement, Boren says it appears this did not originate at Oklahoma but that there was enough evidence to suspend someone immediately. He says the university will not tolerate hate speech.

The name of student was not released.

Gutman says black students at Penn were anonymously added to a list of people on the app GroupMe, which allows users and non-users to exchange texts and photos, and that the students received threats of lynching accompanied by racial slurs.

She says the FBI is also assisting with the investigation.
