PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man was rushed to the hospital after a police-involved shooting in Olney Tuesday. Chopper 3 was over the scene along the 5400 block of North 6th Street.

Officers from the Officer-Involved Shooting Unit and Internal Affairs are both involved in this investigation after an officer on the force for three years fired her weapon, sending a 22-year-old man to the hospital.

According to police, an officer showed up to the property when a 22-year-old man went after her with a box cutter.

When she turned around to get away, police say he grabbed her from behind and had his hands around her throat. Both the officer and suspect fell to the ground, but the officer was able to grab her gun and shoot the suspect once in the upper left leg.

He was taken to Einstein Medical Center where he is in stable condition.

"She did sustain some contusions and abrasions on her arms and elbows. I saw that myself," Staff Inspector Sekou Kinebrew said.

Some nearby residents who did not want to be identified say they saw the shooting unfold.

"She didn't tase him, she didn't mase him, she shot him in his legs," one person said.

Staff Inspector Kinebrew did acknowledge that the police department realizes tensions are very high and understands the frustration.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard protocol, as the investigation continues.

CBS3's Kimberly Davis contributed to this report.
