Officer Responding To Delaware County House Fire Injured In Single-Car Crash

MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) -- A police officer was injured while responding to a house fire in Delaware County Wednesday.

The fire started at about 9 a.m. inside a home in the 500 block of Washington Avenue in Media.

According to fire officials, the fire started inside a twin home and eventually spread to the adjoining residence.

It took firefighters nearly two hours to bring the three-alarm fire fully under control.

Officials say an elderly female and a male in his 20's were rescued from the flames by neighbors.

Authorities say Officer Kevin Smith, who was responding to the fire, was involved in a single-car crash on West Rose Valley Road, just west of Old Mill Lane in the Borough of Rose Valley.

Officials say the accident is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police, but it initially appears that he lost control of his vehicle after hitting a patch of black ice on the roadway.

Officer Smith was transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries and released.

The cause of the fire and the crash remain under investigation.
