No Charges Against Police In Fatal Bridgeton, NJ Shooting

BRIDGETON, N.J. (CBS) — A grand jury in Cumberland County has decided not to file any criminal charges against two Bridgeton police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a Millville man during a car stop in late December.

A press release issued by First Assistant County Prosecutor Harold Shapiro lays out details of the incident that claimed the life of 36-year-old Jerame Reid.

While the officers are not identified in the release, it is known that Officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley pulled over a Jaguar for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Police video showed the stop in which Days sees a gun in the car and removes it. Both the driver and Reid, who was a passenger, were ordered to remain in the vehicle. Reid did not heed the demand, and is seen getting out of the car with his hands up.

According to the release, police were aware of Reid's past and were in fear of their lives.

Both officers fired their weapons and Reid was hit several times. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Reid and Days are both African American.

The grand jury's decision followed testimony from both officers and the driver of the Jaguar.

Shapiro, contacted by KYW Newsradio, declined comment aside from the press release. He took control of the case at the request of Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae, who recused herself early on.

Reid's widow has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
