NEXT Weather: Warm welcome to 2023 in Philadelphia region

NEXT Weather: Warm start to 2023

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  -- The start of 2023 is gracing us with some warmer temperatures, but reality will return by the end of the workweek.

Clouds could be stubborn to clear the sky to start the first workweek of 2023, but temperatures still won't budge. Highs Monday afternoon will approach the mid and upper 50s, putting the region 15 to 20 degrees above average for this time of the year.

Rain Tuesday… record highs Wednesday?

Foggy skies will start us off on Tuesday, some of it could be dense making for a slow morning commute.

A strong south-southwest wind picks up on Tuesday ahead of our next system, allowing temperatures to surge.

Highs will climb into the low 60s for most areas, and the mid-60s are likely from the Wildwoods to Cape May. Rain showers also return to some neighborhoods north and west of Interstate 95 Tuesday morning.

Showers are also possible at midday across Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs. South Jersey may dodge the chance of rain altogether.

By Wednesday, a front lines up to our west before it makes its way through the area Wednesday night into Thursday. Highs will soar into the mid-60s.

In Philadelphia, the record-high for Wednesday was set back in 1950, at 68 degrees. The NEXT Weather team's forecast high is 66, so we're going to be very close.

Areas south and along the Jersey Shore may get very close to 70!

Reality check

By the end of the week, a trough will dig into the area across the upper levels, allowing colder air to spill in. Think of Thursday as the transition day: a few showers and highs cooling down into the low 50s.

Friday is when we firmly dive back into the 40s, back to seasonable temperatures regionwide.  We could be dealing with mostly cloudy skies and a chance of showers to round out the week.

The weekend is trending dry and seasonal.
