New Tarantula Exhibit Opens This Week In Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tarantulas! Just the word may send shivers up your spine.
Live tarantulas spiders are the stars of the show at a new exhibit.
They're fast, hairy and some call them scary. There are nearly 20 types of tarantulas on display at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University's temporary exhibit called "Tarantulas: Alive and Up Close." The show opens Saturday and runs through May.
Karen Verderame is a invertebrate specialist with the Academy.
"Tarantulas are not deadly to humans. There are some where their venom has a little bit more of kick to it, the only way that they would really be harmful is if you were allergic to their venom like in the case like some people are allergic to bee stings," said Verderame.
There are also educational interactive activities like a scavenger hunt and putting on tarantula costumes and jumping into a giant specimen jar.
