New Philadelphia Market Offers Fresh, Affordable Food

By Suzanne Monaghan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new farmers' market in Philadelphia celebrated its grand opening Sunday.

The market at Broad and Mt. Vernon Streets is a joint project with Congregation Rodelph Shalom and the Food Trust. The goal is to bring affordable, nutritious food to the community.

Allen lives in the neighborhood and stopped by to stock up on the fresh produce:

"Onions, some beets, cubanelle peppers, tomatoes."

And those veggies were all grown on Raymond Sobeleski's farm. Sobeleski says he drives all the way from Bloomsberg to bring his produce to the market:

"The need for the people to get fresh fruits and vegetables because it's always in demand and I would imagine there's not many grocery stores here in the city."

Yael Lehmann is Executive Director of the Food Trust.

"Food Trust does run almost 30 farmers' markets throughout the city, primarily in low-income neighborhoods and we accept food stamps at all those markets," she tells KYW Newsradio.

The market will be open Sundays through the fall.
