By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Mutter Museum in Center City has a vast collection of medical oddities. So where better to hold an art exhibit featuring a series of gold leaf paintings depicting ailing body parts.

The exhibit is called La Maladie, a series of paintings inspired by medical illustrations found in rare book collections and set on gold leaf.

One work is entitled "Pain."

"You see his face along with the dissected portions of his neck, head," said artist Besty Stirratt.

"And the facial expression to me is what really connects us to his humanity. I don't want people to be afraid of this work, but I mean let's face it, it's going to, not be something people, not everyone wants to hang over their sofa."

Stirratt hopes those viewing her art will see a connection with the human condition.

"People have to realize that things happen to our bodies and we are mortal."

The exhibit opens today and runs through July 8th.
