Montco Sheriff's Office Holding Series Of Free Seminars To Teach People How To Be Responsible Gun Owners

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is promoting gun safety with a series of free seminars designed to teach people how to become responsible gun owners.

There are about 50,000 gun permits registered with the sheriff's office and Sheriff Russell Bono says that number continues to increase. On any given day he says there's a line of people waiting to fill out the paperwork. The seminars will cover how to choose the right weapon, how to clean and handle firearms and basic shooting fundamentals.

Bono says participants will also get a free gun lock.

"The people we're trying to target are the people that are coming in for new permits, the ones that are not renewing permits that they've had for twenty years, the assumption is they are familiar with the weapons that they use."

Bono doesn't believe there's any mandatory gun training, that's something he says the Legislature would have to deal with, but he would support that. The right to bear arms he says is absolutely guaranteed under the Constitution, but responsibilities come with that.
