Marcus Mariota Gets The Cover Of Sports Illustrated

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It might be tough to look at for some Eagles fans, but Marcus Mariota is on the cover of Sports Illustrated fresh off being selected by the Titans with the second overall pick in last week's draft.

The rumors were flying all day on Thursday, as they did for the months leading up to the draft, that maybe, just maybe, Chip Kelly would be able to swing a deal to bring Mariota to Philadelphia.

Whether Kelly relentlessly pursued his former pupil or whether he pulled up, saw the price and didn't even get out the car, Mariota is a Titan and now there is this:

Following a sports weekend that included the Kentucky Derby, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao and a game seven first round exit for the defending NBA Champion Spurs, Mariota still wound up on the cover of SI.

Even Jamies Winston, the only player selected before Mariota and a quarterback who also has the assignment of reviving a franchise, did not get the nod.

For some Eagles fans, the cover might serve as a reminder of the player that got away. However, Mariota might not live up to the hype.

In that case, the cover may one day be a symbol of the catastrophic move that the Eagles luckily avoided. Either way, this cover may be a tough one for Eagles fans to ignore.
