Man Shot By Police In West Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police shot and critically wounded a man when he allegedly reached for an officer's gun during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday at Media and North Conestoga Streets.

Police say they were conducting a vehicle investigation and had asked a passenger in the backseat to step out of the vehicle after he gave officers false information. After exiting the vehicle, police say, the man began struggling with officers and attempted to grab one of the officer's guns.

The officer yelled to his partner that the man was getting his gun, at which point, police say, his partner opened fire, striking the 28-year-old man in the abdomen.

Authorities say the man then ran from police, but was apprehended a few blocks away.

The suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

A man and a woman who were also inside the vehicle were taken into custody and were being questioned by investigators. Neither of them were involved in the scuffle with police.

Authorities say the suspect was wanted for a probation violation regarding a prior robbery arrest.

There was no immediate word on whether any weapons were found inside the vehicle.

The officers involved suffered minor injuries to their hands and knees, but did not need medical treatment.
