Local Serial DUI Offender Sentenced To 4-8 Years In Prison

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A serial DUI offender was sentenced this week to four to eight years in prison.
The prosecutor says the 42-year-old defendant will now serve a significant sentence and be under court supervision for up to 12 years.
Prosecutor Mark Gilson says this was defendant Jason Kohler's fourth DUI and he's a menace to society.
"It's not just that he is going to drink himself to death some day, it's that he seems to want to get behind the wheel of car when he is drinking, even when he's on probation for having done this, even when his license has been suspended."
In the latest DUI crash, Gilson says Kohler ran a stop sign and T-boned another car, injuring the driver, then tried to flee by carjacking two other motorists, Good Samaritans who stopped to render assistance.
"He was able to get in one of the cars of one of the other drivers and used his finger as a simulated gun to try to carjack that individual. That person actually drove a short distance and realized the defendant was just using his finger. At that point, the driver pulled over and with the help of others held Kohler for police."
The defense attorney says Kohler showed sincere remorse that his disease of addiction hurt the victims and his own family.
