Local Police Department Designates Safe Zones For Completing Online Purchases On Sites Such As Craigslist

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (AP) — In an effort to increase safety with online purchases, a suburban Philadelphia police department has announced that it is providing safe zones for completing transactions.

The Conshohocken Police Department announced Tuesday that it's designating its parking lot and lobby as safe zones for people meeting to complete transactions made through Craigslist or other online sites.

The move came after an officer's wife told him she was going to another person's house to complete an online purchase, which he didn't think was safe. Authorities say they weren't reacting to any crimes associated with online purchases in the borough.

Authorities say transaction safe zones aren't prevalent in the area, but they hope it spreads. A similar program was launched by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Florida in May.
